James Brydges (1673-1744): British statesman and patron of the arts; MP for Hereford (1698-1714), Clerk of the Hanaper (1714); Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire and Radnor (1721-1742). During the War of Spanish Succession he served as Paymaster General for the Forces Abroad. The dukedom and the post of the clerk of Hanaper was inherited by his son, Henry Brydges, 2nd Duke of Chandos.
